Guwahati: The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport has made a significant stride towards sustainability by launching the Electric Vehicle Tug (EVT) on World Environment Day.

The airport authority announced the introduction of EVT for ground handling operations, with Indigo Airlines being the first stakeholder to embrace this initiative.

During the inauguration of the first EVT at the airport, Chief Airport Officer Utpal Baruah said this event marks the beginning of a new era. The airport has set a mandate to replace all fossil fuel-operated vehicles with EVT as soon as possible.

Further, the upcoming new integrated terminal building, expected to be operational by the end of next year, will incorporate several environmental sustainability features, including the complete utilisation of electric vehicles. Baruah emphasised that environmental awareness should be a way of life, not just an occasional celebration, and urged all stakeholders to embrace this initiative to ensure a better world for future generations.

Baruah extended his gratitude to Joydeep Sarkar, associate director at Indigo, for their pioneering role in this unique step towards replacing conventional vehicles with EVT.
