DPIIT Recognises 2,054 Startups In NER, Assam leads, Tripura And Manipur Follow

Agartala: North East India Records over 2,000 Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade  (DPIIT)-Recognised Startups, in which Assam bags the top position following Manipur and Tripura. This information was given by the Minister of State of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Sukanta Majumdar, in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.

The report said the Government launched the Startup India initiative on January 16, 2016, intending to build a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation and startups and encouraging investments in the startup ecosystem of the country, 

The State-wise number of entities in the NER which have been recognised as startups by DPIIT as of December 31, 2024, is Arunachal Pradesh with 47, Assam with 1487, 179 in Manipur, 62 startups in Meghalaya, 41 in Mizoram, 85 in Nagaland, 12 in Sikkim and 141 in Tripura taking the tally to 2054.

“In addition to the above, North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd., an NBFC under the administrative control of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region through the North East Enterprise Development Scheme (NEEDS) scheme, has been supporting first-generation entrepreneurs for developing startup ecosystem of North East Region of India”, the report said.

According to Impact Report 2022-2023 by Assam Government’s Department of Industries and Commerce, the Assam startup was launched on January 20, 2019, aiming to create and nurture the startup ecosystem in Assam.

In Tripura, the policy came into effect in 2019, and on January 24, 2025, the state government re-launched it again. The state government has approved a budget worth Rs 50 Crores to support 101 startups during the Tripura Startup Policy-2024.

Under the 2019 policy, 26 IT-based startups were registered and provided incentives exceeding Rs. 1 crore, creating approximately 130 jobs.

Presently, 127 startups from Tripura, including the 26 recognised under the IT/ITES Startup Scheme, are registered with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Government of India. The new Tripura Startup Policy-2024 has been designed to extend support to the remaining 101 startups and to encourage new ventures across a broader range of sectors beyond IT and ITES
