Shillong: Meghalaya Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal conducted a high-level inspection of the Umiam Bridge today, noting significant progress in the ongoing Dam Rehabilitation & Improvement Projects (DRIP), officials said.

Minister Mondal expressed optimism that the bridge would be fully operational by the end of this month. He also announced that a high-power committee would convene on Monday to finalize the official opening date. This committee will include a consultant from IIT Guwahati, the Director General of Police, PWD officials, and representatives from the District Administration of East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi districts.

Before the inspection, Mondal chaired a review meeting to evaluate the current status of the bridge's rehabilitation. The meeting included key officials such as Sanjay Goyal, Commissioner and Secretary to the Power Department and Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), Bloomingstar Wahlang, Director Generation of MePGCL, and representatives from ITD Cementation.

Emphasizing the importance of completing the remaining work promptly, the Minister underscored the need to ensure both the safety and longevity of the dam.

The ongoing works fall under the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Projects (DRIP Phase II & III), which began on December 14 last year. The DRIP initiative aims to enhance and rehabilitate dams and their associated infrastructure. Key activities include drilling and grouting of the dam, crack repairs, and hydro-mechanical works
