Guwahati: A new proposal for construction of a 180-kilometre rail line from Chaparmukh Junction in Assam to Jowai in Meghalaya is gaining attention. According to reports, the proposed rail line aims to enhance regional connectivity, boost economic growth and tourism.
Reportedly, the rail link will pass through Bhoksong, Rajagaon, Baithalangso, Jengkha, Kherani, and Umrangso, improving connectivity between Assam and Meghalaya. Moreover, this will be the first direct rail link to Jowai, which is Meghalaya's key border district.
The project, which will provide access to Umrangso’s water reservoirs and Jowai’s hills, is currently under survey. The project will offer a cost-effective alternative to road transport and address critical gaps in the existing transportation infrastructure.

Byrnihat-Shillong Railway Project
On the other hand, Meghalaya risks losing Rs 200 crore as the Byrnihat-Shillong railway project stall over migration concerns, with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw urging swift resolution to the land acquisition issues. Reportedly, this ongoing delay has caused much frustration, particularly since the operational Mendipathar railway station has not significantly impacted migration patterns in the Garo Hills. Despite these challenges, the Chaparmukh-Jowai rail link offers hope for a positive change.
