Guwahati: The country’s apex body for wildlife-related matters has approved five “very important” projects for Assam, the state’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed on Thursday.

The first of these projects approved by the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) is an elevated project near the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve. The four-lane project, which will cost around Rs 6,000 crore, is expected to reduce the number of fatal accidents involving animals in the park.

The Guwahati Ring Road project - including the Narengi-Kurua bridge - has also been approved by the wildlife body, stated Biswa Sarma. The ring road envisions improving Assam's road infrastructure and connectivity, especially around the capital region. The Chief Minister recently met Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to discuss his plans for the project.

Meanwhile, the NBWL has also given the nod for two elevated railway corridors in the Deepor Beel -  a Ramsar site known for its fish and bird diversity and rich aquatic vegetation. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has been tasked with constructing the elevated corridor in Deepor Beel to end elephant deaths on railway tracks, crossing the Ramsar site.

The Chapaguri to Amteka Assam Mala project road, up to the Bhutan border, is the last of the projects approved on Friday. The border with Bhutan is expected to be a key region for Assam’s economy in the coming years. Last December, Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck announced plans to develop a massive ‘international city’ in an area of over 1,000 square kilometres on its border with Assam. Earlier, during his state visit to India, Wangchuck met Biswa Sarma to discuss collaborations on several key sectors.
