Guwahati: Assam's first Electronic City, which will be home to the nation's first semiconductor factory, will be named after industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared on Tuesday. The choice was made at a Cabinet meeting in honour of late industrialist Ratan Tata's service to Assam, the CM shared. The Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor plant, being set up in Jagiroad, is expected to transform Assam into a major semiconductor and advanced electronics hub.

“In recognition of the Tata Group and Ratan Tata’s contributions, the state cabinet has decided to name the entire area covering the semiconductor plant, electronic park, and the proposed Electronic City township as Ratan Tata Electronic City," Himanta Biswa Sarma said. The Chief Minister credited Mr Tata’s bold decision to establish the semiconductor plant in Assam as a game changer. "Had he not taken this step, we would not have seen such strong interest from other top industrialists looking to invest in Assam," he added.

Ratan Tata has a long association with Assam, with the Tata Group investing in the state's tea sector early on. His latest gift was the chip assembly facility, which will make Assam a top semiconductor destination. Ratan Tata was awarded Assam's highest civilian award, the Assam Baibhav, in 2022 in recognition of his efforts.

Apart from his contributions in the industrial front, Ratan Tata was also instrumental in the development of cancer care in Assam, prioritizing low-cost treatment for underprivileged patients who were unable to seek expensive medical facilities. With the Ratan Tata Electronic City, Assam will become a leading player in India's electronics and semiconductor industry, a major achievement in Assam's industrial history.
