The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sealed the deal for the construction of the much-anticipated Guwahati Ring Road project with M/s Dineshchandra R Agrawal Infracon Pvt. Ltd. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav, other senior officers from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the concessionaire.

This agreement is a milestone in efforts to decongest urban traffic in Guwahati and mend logistics efficiency across Assam and connecting states. The upcoming 121-kilometre Ring Road will be advanced under the Build-Operate-Toll (BOT) model, notably without any government grant, reflecting increasing private sector confidence in infrastructure projects in the Northeast.

The total project estimate is likely Rs. 7,000 crore, accounting for land acquisition, utility shifting, and other incidental expenses, of which construction cost would likely be Rs. 5,729 crore.

The Guwahati Ring Road aims to ease traffic by redirecting heavy vehicles, cutting travel time, reducing pollution, and enhancing road safety. Once completed, the project is expected to meaningfully ease congestion in the capital city of Assam, which helps as a critical entry to the Northeast.

Officials revealed that the project will also spur commercial growth by refining road links between industrial centres, border trade points, and rural areas. It will offer integrated links to key national highways and corridors connecting Assam to Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and beyond.

"This project is a strategic move towards realizing the vision of improved regional connectivity and inclusive development in the Northeast," said a senior NHAI official.

The private concessionaire will be accountable for the operation and maintenance of the road during the concession period and will recover costs through toll collection.

The Guwahati Ring Road project aligns with the centre's broader focus on infrastructure development in the Northeast under programs such as PM Gati Shakti and Act East Policy and is expected to act as a catalyst for better trade, tourism, and employment in the region. While the project timeline is yet to be confirmed, construction is likely to begin shortly.
