Guwahati: Royal Global School in Guwahati, Assam introduced the first-ever AI teacher in the northeastern region named 'Iris', which is creating quite a buzz among the students.

Iris has been dressed up in the traditional mekhela-chador. During the session, Iris effortlessly answered questions from their syllabus and beyond, providing detailed explanations and examples that enriched their learning experience. Additionally, a student's question about hemoglobin led to an impressive display of Iris's capabilities.

Notably, the robot has been developed in collaboration with Makerlabs Edu-tech under the Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) project initiated by NITI Aayog. IRIS is equipped with an AI-based voice assistant to provide “explanations” and deliver “educational content”, the developer stated. It can move around on a wheeled platform and “manipulate objects, perform demonstrations, and engage in hands-on learning activities.”

The robot was first introduced at the KTCT Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, in March. A teacher at Royal Global School expressed the students' excitement, stating, "The children are very excited and like this 'teacher' because she always has answers to their questions."

"Students were delighted by Iris's interactive features, including handshakes, which added a fun and engaging element to the learning process", according to Royal. "The classroom atmosphere was characterised by wonder and joy as the blend of cutting-edge technology and interactive education set a vibrant tone for future learning experiences."
