Shillong: The Meghalaya New and Renewable Energy Development Agency, in collaboration with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, recently conducted a national seminar on the promotion of clean energy access in North East India.
The main objective of the seminar was to explore and understand potential pathways to energise the population of the northeastern states through clean energy interventions.

The seminar was held on June 23. State Power Minister AT Mondal, while addressing the seminar, said that it would be a great opportunity for the state and the region as a whole to tap other forms of new and renewable energy to address the power shortage, especially in Meghalaya.

Meghalaya faced an acute power shortage this summer and owing to a lack of rain, the Umiam lake water level went down drastically, posing a threat to the hydro-power plant that the government thought had to shut down.

The day-long programme saw the participation of resource persons who spoke on a wide range of topics relating to the overview and current status of compressed biogas, biomass pellets and briquettes as fuels, the role of energy access in livelihood enhancement in the North East, and penetration of small and medium scale biogas plants with a special focus on the North East.

The seminar was also attended by various government agencies, including the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Association of Renewable Energy Agencies of States (AREAS), IIT Guwahati and North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR).
