The Assam Government has decided to introduce power purchase subsidy of Rs. 190 crore to the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) to avoid hike in retail tariff for the Financial Year 2022-2023 and thus, provide relief to household consumers.

The decision was made in the Cabinet's weekly meeting held today.

In the last month, the Chief Minister took cognizance of inflated electricity bills due to installation of smart meters and had instructed APDCL to take remedial action against it as and where required.

Sarma said that there is no increase in the power tariff, but instances of unreasonable bill amounts have come in from consumers, which is due to faulty readings in some of the newly-installed smart meters.

The 19 electrical circles where smart meters are being installed are Nagaon, Morigaon, Karbi Anglong and North Cachar District, Cachar, Badarpur, Jorhat, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Rangiya, Mangaldai, Tezpur, North Lakhimpur, Guwahati Electrical Circle-I and Guwahati Electrical Circle-II.

The Cabinet also decided to boost power generation by starting a 24 Megawatt Karbi Langpi Middle II Hydro Power Project at a cost of Rs. 300.7 crore along with reappropriation proposal required for its implementation.

The project is estimated to be completed within 36 months from the date of its commencement. It will give a significant boost to the power generation of Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGCL) and thus enable to meet the growing demand for power in the State.
