XR Startup Program: to discover, nurture, and accelerate XR technology startups across India.
As one of the 100 top-tier incubators envisioned by the Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog Government of India, the AIC-SMU Technology Business Incubation Foundation (AIC-SMUTBI) was founded in September 2018. This is consistent with the Indian government's efforts to promote "Make in India" and "Start-up India." The first Atal Incubation Center in North-East India is located on the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology campus, and it enjoys a prime location beside the Teesta River. By providing seed capital, mentorship, and support infrastructure to worthy young entrepreneurs who wish to pursue their business venture ambitions, the incubator promotes and fosters early-stage entrepreneurial efforts that are centered on technology and innovation.
Young entrepreneurs are consistently encouraged by AIC-SMUTBI to develop their skills in creating valuable human resources rather than the traditional personnel that meets industry demands. Until they graduate from this incubation center after a gestation period of roughly two years, they accept young entrepreneurs with ground-breaking ideas that have market potential by mentoring them to become employers rather than employees.
Meta and MeitY Startup Hub collaborate on the XR Startup Program. The program intends to hasten India's involvement in creating the metaverse's framework and supporting the growth of Extended Reality (XR) technology in India.
The next stage of the internet is the metaverse. It will consist of a collection of networked digital environments, including 3D experiences, that will enable users to do actions they would not be able to carry out in the real world. While a sense of presence will be the hallmark of the metaverse, Extended Reality (XR), which includes Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality, will be the hallmark of the metaverse.
The metaverse won’t be built overnight by a single company. It will be built by multiple stakeholders across the industry who will help determine how to build responsibly.
AIC-SMUTBI has been selected as one of the 4 Implementation partners in India by META (Parent Company of Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp) to support Startups who are working in the technology domain of AR/VR (XR).
Many startups from Northeast India including Encamp Adventures are also working upon VR / AR technologies for sustainable tourism experiences in Northeast India, Nepal and Bhutan.
AIC-SMUTBI will run an Acceleration cohort of 10 Startups fully supported by META and MSH. A Grand Challenge in AR/VR that can solve pertinent problems of Tourism/AgriTech/Climate Action and Sustainability is also open to anyone with an IDEA (even without a product).
Support will be given to the innovators so they may advance from the R&D stage to creating useful products and services. A total of 16 innovators will receive funding of Rs 20 lakhs each and additional support to help them construct Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) or prototypes after the first 80 innovators are shortlisted to attend a bootcamp.
Along with other things, the Accelerator and Grand Challenge will help startups and innovators connect with customers, find cooperation opportunities, and raise money.
