Ziro: NESHILP, a society promoted by NEDFi (North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Limited), organized a “ Capacity Building programme on Mima Grass based craft for the artisans of Arunachal Pradesh” under CSR policy of NEDFi.
It was a 15 day programme which was inaugurated by Er. Tage Taki, Minister for Agriculture and Allied Departments, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh on Monday, 26th June at the weaving centre of Lempia Women Welfare Society, Tajang Village, Ziro in Lower Subansiri district.
Er. Tage Taki, Minister for Agriculture and Allied Department, Arunachal Pradesh mentioned that Mima grass is found in abundance at Ziro and its use for handicraft items will help the women beneficiaries to prepare eco-friendly products and enhance their income. He thanked NEDFi for organising the program under its CSR initiative.
During the training program, the artisans were imparted skills and knowledge on making various craft products such as yoga mats, table mats, file covers, bags, basketry, and other accessories using Mima Grass. The objective was to enable the artisans to create eco-friendly products and enhance their income by utilizing the abundance of Mima Grass found in Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh.
Bamin Nime, the Deputy Commissioner of Lower Subansiri district, appreciated the initiative to use local raw materials for crafting products and assured market linkage for the artisans' products.
Ashim Kumar Das, Deputy General Manager of NEDFi Guwahati, told Busines-Northeast that 30 artisans participated in the training. Following the training, NESHILP has planned to provide market linkage for the craft persons by promoting and selling their products through various showrooms located in Guwahati, Greater Noida, Mahabalipuram, as well as during the Ziro Music Festival, a popular annual event in Ziro.
NEDFi focuses on promoting natural fiber-based crafts for artisans in the Northeastern region of India. It identifies indigenous raw materials, develops appropriate technology, and disseminates them through capacity-building programs, mentions Das.
In addition to the Mima Grass craft program, NEDFi conducted a residential training program on value addition of cardamom fiber craft at its Craft Incubation Centre in Khetri, which saw the participation of artisans from Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Assam. They also planned to conduct a 10-day training program on dry flower making in Ziro starting from July 11, 2023, and a residential training program on banana fiber craft for artisans from Nagaland at the NEDFi Craft Incubation Centre in Khetri in July 2023, Das added.
NEDFi is involved in various other initiatives, including setting up a Fruit & Vegetable Processing Center in Pfutsero, Nagaland, and implementing a handloom project in Baksa district, Assam. Through NESHILP, NEDFi provides market linkage to more than 3000 artisans and entrepreneurs in the region, aiming to make their initiatives sustainable in the long run.
