Shillong: The Meghalaya government is hoping to complete several long-pending water supply schemes at a cost of Rs 400 crore in Fiscal Year 2023-24.

The pending schemes, which will ease water supply pangs in urban pockets, are Greater Ampati in South West Garo Hills, Nongstoin urban in West Khasi Hills and Greater Rymbai in East Jaintia Hills.

The government has already completed schemes worth Rs 220 crore in the last five years. These include water supply projects in Upper Shillong and Greater Sohra in East Khasi Hills, Greater Baghmara in South Garo Hills, Tura in West Garo Hills and Greater Raliang in West Jaintia Hills.

However, the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme, which would benefit urban Shillong, is still pending for years now.
The state government has also initiated the Williamnagar Water Supply Scheme in East Garo Hills at a cost of Rs 121 crore.

During Budget 2023-24, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma allocated Rs 182 crore for the water supply sector.

Meghalaya has been among the top performers in the Jal Jeevan Mission. The number of households with tap connections has increased from 4,550 in 2019 to almost 3 lakh to date. In view of this, the Centre has assured Rs 3,700 crore for 2023-24. The state government has set a target to provide tap connections to all 6.3 lakh households in the current fiscal.
