Agartala: In a move under the Digital India initiative, the Transport Department of the Government of Tripura has officially transitioned to a cashless payment system, setting a new benchmark in revenue collection and citizen service delivery and collected revenue worth Rs 155 Crore in 2024-25 Financial year which is highest in past seven years.

An official from the Tripura Transport Department revealed that the transformation, which began with a trial run on June 3, 2023, was formally implemented across the state on November 6, 2023.

“This initiative replaces the decades-old practice of cash-based transactions with digital payments, marking a significant step toward modernising public services. Officials noted that the primary objective of this shift was to infuse transparency, reduce corruption, and eliminate the inefficiencies traditionally associated with cash handling. Digital transactions ensure speed, efficiency, and ease for the public while also reducing operational costs and enhancing transparency,” said a senior official of the department.

The Transport Department, a key revenue-generating arm of the state, has demonstrated consistent fiscal strength over the years. Revenue collections over the past few fiscal years are Rs 155.19 crore in FY 2024–25, Rs 145.90 crore in FY 2023–24, Rs 115.63 crore in FY 2022–23, Rs 292.38 crore in FY 2021–22, Rs 287.93 crore in FY 2020–21, Rs 297.14 crore in FY 2019–20, Rs 283.50 crore in FY 2018–19 and Rs 254.38 crore in FY 2017–18.

The department estimates that over 96 per cent of its revenue was previously collected through cash. With the adoption of cashless systems, this figure will likely change drastically, leading to improved service delivery and administrative accountability.

“The switch to digital platforms has not only streamlined operations but also bolstered public trust in the department,” the official added.
Offices across the state have already reported improved compliance and greater ease in managing payments and documentation.
