Shillong: The Meghalaya government has allocated Rs 50 crore for the next five years to build capacity and infrastructure in the fight against the rising drug problem in the state.

The state will set up one de-additction centre for males in West Garo Hills district and a detoxification centre in Ri Bhoi in the first year. In the second year, it will set up a de-addiction centre for females in West Jaintia Hills, a detoxification centre each in West Jaintia Hills and West Garo Hills, three outreach and drop-in centres in Ri BHoi, West Khasi Hills and West Garo Hills, four community peer-led intervention centres in West Garo Hills, Ri Bhoi, East Jaintia Hills and South West Khasi Hills, and three de-addiction centres at prison settings in West Jaintia Hills, West Garo Hills and Ri Bhoi.

The state government recently reconstituted the Anti-Narcotics Task Force, which will also function as the State NCORD Secretariat with the Inspector General of Police (CID) Meghalaya as the chairman; and Assistant Inspector General of Police Shillong as Member Secretary.

The Task Force would dedicate itself to three-fold objectives — to take preventive measures against drug trafficking and undertake issues for action and criminal prosecution of all those including in drug peddling, supply and distribution, to conduct mass awareness campaign and people’s participation in the drive against drug menace and to co-ordinate closely with other stakeholders/agencies/departments etc, at both the state and central levels to achieve the above objectives in a manner that contributes to the vision of a drug-free India.
