Guwahati: Assam Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass has declared that more than 21 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) have been completed in the state, with another 7 lakh also under construction.

Reaffirming the government's pledge to improve rural life, Dass announced that a new survey would be conducted after the current constructions are over, to locate families who continue to reside in kachcha houses. "The new list will be tabled before the Gram Sabha for sanction," he stated.

The Minister also pointed out the different amenities that economically weaker sections are being offered, such as housing, clean drinking water, electricity, and access to banking facilities. He added that such efforts have decreased the role of intermediaries very much.

Highlighting the emphasis of the government on women empowerment, Das quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making each woman independent.

"According to PM Modi, each woman should be independent. We are trying this on our part through Lakhpati Didi, on which more than 8 lakh women have already been helped," he said.

A total of 30 lakh out of over 40 lakh members of self-help groups (SHGs) in the state were chosen to be provided with financial support. "All got Rs 10,000 during the first phase, followed by Rs 25,000, and thereafter a contribution of 50 percent by banks," Dass reported.

The project, the Minister said, is likely to inject Rs 30,000 crore into the state's economy, giving a big fillip to Assam's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
