Itanagar Hosts Buyer-Seller Meet To Strengthen Trade Connections Among Spice Growers

Guwahati: The Spices Board under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, held a Buyer-Seller Meet (BSM) at the D.K. State Convention Centre, Itanagar, to strengthen trade connections and foster direct connections among spice growers from Arunachal Pradesh and other northeastern states with buyers and exporters.

India, a global leader in the spice trade, exported 15,39,692 MT of spices and spice products valued at Rs. 36,958.80 crore (US$4,464.17 million) during 2023-24. Key contributors to the export basket include Chilli, Cumin, Spice Oils and Oleoresins, Mint Products, Turmeric, Curry Powder, Cardamom (small), and Pepper.

Understanding the vast potential of Arunachal Pradesh, home to many indigenous high-value spices, the affair wanted to deliver a platform for commerce and trade while fostering growth in the region’s spice industry.

The  Minister for Commerce and Industry, Labour and Employment, Information, Public Relations, and Printing, Nyato Dukam, attended the event as the Chief Guest. In his address, he emphasized the rapid growth of spice cultivation in Arunachal Pradesh in recent years. He fortified participants to leverage the favourable climatic and soil conditions of the state while urging the Spices Board to provide continued financial and technical support to local farmers.

B.N. Jha, Director (Marketing) of the Spices Board, welcomed the gathering and highlighted the significance of BSMs in fostering direct and effective linkages among growers, buyers, and exporters. He underscored how such initiatives catalyze market expansion, innovation, and sustainable growth within the spice sector.

The event also saw the participation of officials from the Tea Board, APEDA, NABARD, and the Rubber Board. Progressive farmers and grower groups from the Northeast Region (NER) interacted with exporters to understand market prospects and buyer requirements.
