Guwahati: The Assam government reduced ropeway fare by 50 percent for the college students of North Guwahati for the next 30 days. During this period, students will pay only Rs 50 as the current fare for the ropeway stands at Rs 100 for all passengers.

As per reports, this decision comes due to difficulties caused by the ongoing monsoon season. Incessant rains have caused a notable increase in the Brahmaputra River’s water levels, subsequently disrupting the movement of ships and other transportation modes across the river.

Notably, students from North Guwahati who attend colleges on the south bank will be able to avail themselves of the discount after showing their ID cards. This initiative, ordered by the state government and overseen by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMD), aims to ease the travel burden for students during this challenging period.

This fare reduction is expected to alleviate some of the financial strain on students and their families, ensuring that education remains accessible despite the adverse weather conditions.

By offering a discounted fare, the GMD aims to maintain a steady flow of passengers, particularly students, ensuring that the ropeway remains a viable and attractive option during the monsoon season. This strategy not only supports the local community but also helps in mitigating potential revenue losses that might arise from reduced ship movements and increased operational costs during the monsoon.
