Guwahati: Assam’s potential to have floriculture as a thriving business is yet to be explored to the fullest as most of the flowers traded are imported.
Laxmi Dutta, Nodal Officer in the Department of Horticulture told Business-Northeast that the total transaction of flowers annually is as high as Rs 150 crore, of which Rs 135 crore worth of flowers are imported from Kolkata, Pune and Bengaluru.
According to the Department of Agriculture, there is immense scope in the state to make floriculture a thriving business. The major flowers grown commercially in the state are marigold, gerbera, gladiolus, tuberose, orchids and anthurium. Around 2,200 hectares of land are under commercial flower production.
But it faces some challenges as well like floods and summer. The main cultivation area is Hajo from where flowers are supplied across Assam.
However, the condition of flower production will improve if some protected cultivation processes are adopted.
Further, the state needs a mission for the improvement of the culture of floriculture immediately.
