The rising costs associated with smart meter bills have sparked significant concern among the public, organizations, and the government. Protests have erupted across various parts of Assam, led by recognized organizations and political parties, who claim that the charges from smart meters are exorbitant. However, the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) and the government assert that smart meters are functioning correctly in most cases. They have advised anyone facing issues with their smart meter to contact APDCL for assistance.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has addressed citizens through a press release, acknowledging their concerns and grievances. He shared the APDCL helpline numbers—1912, 7575999666, and 8876100100—and informed the public that they can also reach out via email at support@apdcl.org.
Bimal Das, Advisor of the All Assam Electricity Consumers Association, commented, "Smart meters have been banned in major cities and states due to their improper functioning. Consumers are often shocked by their bill consumption and the monthly bill calculations. It has become a significant concern, especially when it comes to paying the bills once they are due."
