In a significant development for wildlife conservation, the Poba Reserve Forest in northeastern Assam is set to be officially designated as a wildlife sanctuary. This decision follows a request by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and was announced by Environment and Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary after a zero-hour notice by MLA Bhuban Pegu in the Assam Legislative Assembly.

The newly established Poba Wildlife Sanctuary will cover 257.29 square kilometers, including the Poba Reserve Forest, Kabu Chapri Proposed Reserve Forest, and adjacent riverine areas. This biodiverse rainforest is renowned for its rich wildlife and serves as a crucial migratory route for elephants, linking the D'Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary, Kabu Chapri Proposed Reserve Forest, and Dibru-Saikhowa National Park.

The sanctuary is home to various arboreal species, including the slow loris and capped langur, and supports approximately 45 species of birds and reptiles. The confluence of the Siang and Lohit rivers further enhances its ecological significance, fostering a diverse range of fish species. Additionally, the forest's wide array of orchids makes it a popular spot for nature enthusiasts and researchers alike.
