Guwahati: Union Minister for Railways, Electronics and IT, and Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced a series of key infrastructure and technology initiatives to accelerate Assam’s growth during the Advantage Assam 2.0: Investment and Infrastructure summit in Guwahati.
Among the key highlights, plans for a new semiconductor plant in Assam were unveiled, reinforcing the state’s emerging role in electronics and semiconductor manufacturing. Additionally, Vaishnaw revealed that Guwahati Railway Station will be transformed into an IT hub, further strengthening the region’s digital infrastructure.
Since 2014, the government has constructed 1,824 km of new railway tracks across Assam and the Northeast to enhance connectivity and logistics and six additional Gati Shakti cargo terminals will be developed. Vaishnaw also outlined plans to improve transport links between Assam and Bhutan, unlocking new avenues for economic growth.
Speaking to Business North East (BNE), Vaishnaw confirmed, “Many Vande Bharat trains are coming to the region.”
The Greenfield Electronic Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) at Bongora, Kamrup, will be developed under the Electronics Manufacturing Scheme with an investment of Rs.120 crores, which will further strengthen Assam’s electronics sector.
Additionally, the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) has been upgraded to a Deemed-to-be University, with plans to set up a new campus in Jagiroad.
The Assam government has also signed MoUs with 10 industry groups from Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan, fostering international partnerships and attracting investment to the state’s growing electronics ecosystem while strengthening the semiconductor industry.
These initiatives position Assam as a rising hub for technology, manufacturing, and connectivity, aligning with the state’s broader vision for industrial and digital transformation.
