Assam To Get Four Hyperscale Data Centres, 5G Lab At Gauhati University

Guwahati: Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday stated the centre plans to set up four hyperscale data centres in Assam, which will be Asia's largest. While addressing a technical session at the Advantage Assam 2.0 business summit, the minister revealed that a budget of Rs. 400 crore has been invested in the state to strengthen its telecom and IT infrastructure. 

PM Modi inaugurated the first data centre in the North East last year. "Along with 5G network, we are also looking at Asia's four largest hyperscale data centres to be set up in Assam, having a size of 1 million sq ft," he said, adding that the centre wants to ensure every capability reaches the northeastern region.

He further mentioned the launch of a state-of-the-art 5G lab at Gauhati University and acknowledged that the lab's operations would commence immediately. He also highlighted Assam’s economic progress, citing a decade-long development rate of 12.6 per cent and a record growth of 19.6 per cent in the past year.

He stressed the need for Assam to transition from an employee-driven economy to one led by businesspersons and innovators.

Industry bests also shared their dream for Assam’s digital future. Robert J Ravi of BSNL outlined three important supports for the state’s technological development under the 'IWay to Viksit Assam' initiative: safeguarding wide digital access, equipping businesses with next-generation automation, and applying smart governance for better citizen services. Sunil Dutt of Reliance Jio described digital connectivity as the "life force of progress" and urged Assam to hug the numerical uprising to reclaim its historical rank.
