Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has inaugurated the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and Waste to Compost Plant in North Lakhimpur, a key initiative aimed at making the town garbage-free and promoting sustainable waste management. The facility, constructed under the North Lakhimpur Municipal Corporation, will focus on the scientific disposal of waste materials.

As part of a broader state initiative to convert wastelands into urban forests, the Chandmari area, which had served as a dumping ground for 40-50 years, has now been cleared of legacy waste. This effort will reclaim around 16 bighas of land along the Sumdiri River, which will be developed into an 'Urban Forest cum Urban Retreat Zone.' The transformation of this area is expected to improve the quality of life for local residents and restore the river to its natural state.

During his visit, Dr. Sarma reviewed the construction progress of several other critical infrastructure projects, including the North Lakhimpur-Ghunasuti RCC bridge over the Subansiri River, which is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 400 crore. He also inspected the ongoing construction of the Lakhimpur Inter-state Bus Terminus, set to become operational by August 2025. Additionally, the Chief Minister visited the site of the rail over-bridge on Rangajan Road to assess its development.

Dr. Sarma emphasized his government's commitment to the development of districts on the north bank of the Brahmaputra. Upgrading Lakhimpur College to university status and establishing a nursing college at Lakhimpur Medical College are among the top priorities for the district.
