Hong Kong: Cathay Cargo, a division of Cathay Pacific Airways, is aiming to attract Indian airlines to utilise its cargo terminal in Hong Kong and is currently in discussions with one Indian carrier.

As per reports, Mark Watts, Chief Operating Officer of Cathay Cargo Terminal, revealed that although no Indian airlines are presently using their facility, talks are underway with one potential partner.

Reportedly, Cathay Cargo Terminal, which spans 100,000 square metres and has the capacity to handle 2.7 million tonnes of cargo annually, is open to all airlines operating in Hong Kong. "We don't currently have any Indian air carriers, but I would definitely like to have more," Watts said in an interview. While he refrained from naming the Indian airline involved in negotiations, he expressed optimism about reaching an agreement.

Watts further noted that the terminal is adequately sized for the near future but has room for expansion if needed. He also mentioned that while Cathay Cargo has no immediate plans to establish cargo terminals outside Hong Kong, the company remains open to opportunities, including in India.

Cathay Cargo is focusing on India's growing role in global manufacturing and exports. Tom Owen, Director of Cargo at Cathay Pacific, emphasized the company's capacity to connect India with the rest of the world. "India needs more capacity to connect to the world, and that's where we can play an important role," Owen said. In terms of sustainability, Cathay Cargo is working towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, with an interim goal of cutting emissions by 50% by 2035.

Cathay Cargo is also taking steps to reduce its environmental footprint by recycling plastic sheets used for covering cargo. These plastics are compressed, recycled, and returned as new cover sheets. The company is conducting trials in various climate conditions to determine the most effective and sustainable materials.

Additionally, Cathay Cargo is exploring the use of artificial intelligence (Al) to enhance the safety and efficiency of its operations. Al systems are expected to improve worker safety and optimise cargo handling processes. Watts highlighted the potential of Al to not only improve services but also make work more engaging and safer for employees.
