Women's Market in Titabar: A personification of women's Empowerment.

An exclusive women centric market has been set up involving 234 self help groups under 4 Panchayat in Titabar's Dangdhora area.

It is run only by women sellers with no involvement of men sellers in it. This is the second women exclusive market in Assam, established on April 10, 2018.
The market is held every Thursday.

Speaking to Business Northeast one of the sellers said, "All women in our village came together to establish this market with an objective of economic empowerment. Today all of us are self-reliant."

The women sellers are being provided training under self-help groups to grow agricultural products along with making products using local craft that can be sold in these markets. Every product, from home grown fresh vegetables to hand waved clothes are exhibited in the market.

On asking about their business, one of the sellers said, "The sale of the items has remained fluctuating. On our very first day two years back the market was able to earn a total amount of Rs. 70,000 approximately. And thereafter, we were able to establish ourselves with handsome earnings for the initial days. However, things started going down hill since the time of COVID-19 induced lockdown. "

Nowadays, sales of the items are at a stagnant phase, which is neither too high nor too less.

However, during occasions like Bihu, the market witnessed a sudden rise."

People from urban or semi-urban areas are eager to buy village products, while villagers look out for what the urban areas have to offer. For locally produced goods, weekly markets are the gateway to the larger marketing network.

President of the cluster, Taruni Tamuli Saikia said that during the last Magh mela, the market made a profit of Rs. 76,300. At the same time, during the Rongali mela it could only make a profit of Rs. 48,600.

Assam’s first all-women market was opened two years back in Namrup district. It was inspired by Manipur’s first all-women market, Ima Keithel.

It is to be mentioned that the development of a woman can aid the development of the entire family, which in turn will help develop the entire district.
