New Delhi: Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) will set up a semiconductor unit in Morigaon, Assam after the Union Cabinet approved the project on Thursday. The plant, backed by an investment of Rs 27,000 crore, aims to create job opportunities in the semiconductor industry and reshape the Northeast Indian region's technological landscape.
Two more semiconductor projects have been approved in Gujarat. While Tata Electronics Private Limited will partner with Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC) in Dholera, CG Power in partnership with Japan's Renesas Electronics Corporation and Thailand's Stars Microelectronics will set up a plant in Sanand. All three units will incur investments worth around Rs 1.26 lakh crore and production will begin within the next 100 days, government officials said.
Details of the Assam plant were first shared by the state’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in December last year. At the time, it was reported that Tata Group was planning to set up the semiconductor processing plant at an investment of Rs 40,000 crore in Jagiroad, around 55km from the economic centre of Guwahati.
TATA has informed Assam that it needs around 1,000 employees from the state to work at the plant, Biswa Sarma said, making the announcement.
Earlier this month, Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekar, who was in Guwahati for a digital summit, said the plant would provide employment opportunities locally and prevent youths from having to relocate.
Tata Electronics, which will build the plant in Assam, is a newly floated entity in the Indian electronics manufacturing space. In 2022-23, it produced mobile parts worth Rs 463 crores, cementing its place as one of the largest players in the market. The country’s chip programme was rolled out in December 2021 with a total outlay of Rs 76,000 crore.
