Tripura govt presents Rs 27,654-cr deficit budget; proposes no new tax

Agartala: Tripura Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy on July 7 presented a deficit budget of Rs 27,654 crore for the current fiscal year, with no new taxes proposed.

Singha highlighted that in the previous fiscal year (2022-23), Tripura experienced a growth rate of approximately 8.8%, surpassing the national growth rate of 7.20%. For the current fiscal year, the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) is projected to grow around 8%, outpacing the national growth rate of 6-6.5%.

The budget focuses on key sectors, such as social welfare, infrastructure, health, agriculture and allied sectors. It is a tax-free budget with a deficit of Rs 611.30 crore. The capital expenditure is estimated to be Rs 5,358.70 crore, marking a 22.28% increase compared to the previous year’s outlay. The budget includes the proposal of 13 new schemes known as the chief minister’s schemes.
Singha stated that the budget is future-oriented and aimed at fostering growth. It intends to benefit various sections of society, including women, students, youths, employees, pensioners, transgenders, scheduled tribes, scheduled castes, minorities, and other backward classes.

Some of the schemes proposed in the budget are CM-Jana Arogya Yojana, Mukhyamantri Sports Development Scheme, Mukhyamantri Tribal Development Mission, Mukhyamantri Dakhyata Unnayan Prakalpa, Mukhyamantri Nagar Unnayan Prakalpa, and Mukhyamantri Akanksha Scheme.

The budget also includes provisions to establish a centre for Artificial Intelligence (AI) to leverage AI in public services and governance. The proposed allocation for the agriculture and allied sector is over Rs 1,436 crore, while for the health sector, it is over Rs 1,756 crore.
