Guwahati: The Guwahati Neurological Research Centre (GNRC) Hospital has introduced mesh-less small incision open hernia surgery at its Dispur unit.

This minimally invasive procedure offers patients a faster recovery and a lower risk of complications than the traditional hernia repair.

Dr Nipanka Goswami, chief consultant in the Department of Laparoscopic and Minimally Invasive Surgery at GNRC Dispur, said the mission is mesh-less open groin hernia surgery at an affordable cost for the low-income group of people coming from various remote places of Assam and other parts of the North East.

This service is being provided keeping in mind GNRC’s Affordable Health Mission for the masses as a correctable surgical disease like groin hernias occurring in young and active individuals is adding more to the disease burden of society.

The prevalence of groin hernia is approximately 1.7 per 100 individuals for all ages and 4 per 100 individuals for those aged 45 years and above.

There are almost 5,44,000 people currently suffering from groin hernia in Assam. It has resulted in negative economic fallout as most of the sole household male earning members or farmers are kept away from work or cultivation owing to difficulty occurring for a swelling (hernia) in the groin area, sometimes on both sides.
