Guwahati: Srimanta Sankardev Kalakhetra, which serves as a platform for showcasing and performing a wide range of cultural activities, celebrated its 27th Foundation Day today, November 9, 2024. The grand event in Guwahati has been attended by numerous dignitaries.
During an interview with Business North East, Jitul Sonowal, the Vice Chairman of Srimanta Sankardev Kalakhetra reflected on the institution’s journey over nearly three decades. Jitul Sonowal acknowledged the significant efforts made by the Kalakhetra’s leadership, staff, and committees in preserving the cultural essence of this iconic institution.
"It’s not easy to maintain the essence of this place over 27 years," the vice Chairman shared, emphasising the dedication of the entire team in achieving this milestone.
On local employment, Jitul Sonowal revealed that the Kalakhetra provides jobs to 100 employees across various departments to ensure smooth operations. However, he also highlighted unique maintenance challenges faced by the team. He said, "The climate in Assam leads to rapid grass growth, especially during dry spells, requiring frequent trimming to preserve the beauty of the grounds.”
While discussing upcoming projects, Jitul Sonowal shared plans to enhance tourism by introducing new attractions and infrastructure upgrades under the Smart City initiative. Among these is a new musical fountain, aimed at boosting both domestic and international tourism.
When asked about annual funding needs, the Vice Chairman revealed that approximately Rs. 20 crores goes into maintainance of the Kalakhetra's expansive premises, though a precise budget remains challenging to determine.
