In the heart of Guwahati's Pan Bazar, Shaikh Brothers stands as a testament to over 140 years of tradition and innovation in the bakery industry. Founded in 1885 by Shaikh Ghulam Ibrahim, this establishment is recognized as the second oldest bakery in India and the first in Northeast India to import raw materials from Belgium and Australia via steamer.

Shaikh Altaf Hossain, the elder son of the Shaikh family and the current owner, recently shared insights into the bakery’s storied history and its evolution over the years.

“Our journey began with my great-grandfather, who not only established the bakery but also introduced soda water production in the region,” Altaf Hossain told Sweata Das of Business North East (BNE) during an exclusive interview.

This pioneering spirit has been a hallmark of the family’s legacy, allowing Shaikh Brothers to thrive in a competitive market.

The bakery draws an impressive footfall of over 200,000 customers each month, making it a culinary landmark in the region. Known for its wide array of products, Shaikh Brothers offers everything from signature pastries to artisanal bread and a diverse selection of biscuits and traditional foods.

Altaf Hossain attributes this success to the bakery’s commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. “We prioritize our customers’ preferences and adapt our offerings accordingly,” he further stated.

In an effort to stay relevant in today’s fast-paced market, Shaikh Brothers is keen on embracing innovation while honouring its rich heritage. “We blend age-old techniques with contemporary flavours,” Altaf Hossain said, emphasizing the importance of listening to customer feedback. Seasonal offerings and new product introductions are a direct result of this customer engagement, ensuring that every visit to the bakery offers something fresh and delightful.

As the fourth generation leading this historic bakery, Hossain faces the challenge of balancing tradition with the demands of modern consumers. “The key lies in staying relevant while honouring our roots,” the owner of the bakery business stated. This philosophy has allowed Shaikh Brothers to maintain its reputation as a beloved institution in the region.

The bakery industry is evolving rapidly, with new players entering the market and consumer preferences shifting towards healthier options. Altaf Hossain recognizes these trends and is committed to adapting the bakery’s product line accordingly. “We are exploring ways to incorporate healthier choices without compromising on taste,” he further told BNE.

As Shaikh Brothers continues to grow, it remains grounded in its rich history. The blend of tradition and innovation ensures that this iconic bakery will not only survive but thrive in the years to come. Shaikh Altaf Hossain’s vision for the future, rooted in a deep respect for the past, promises to keep the legacy of Shaikh Brothers alive and relevant for generations to come.

In a world where heritage and modernity often clash, Shaikh Brothers stands as a shining example of how tradition can harmoniously coexist with progress, creating a beloved institution that serves both history and the tastes of today’s consumers.
