Guwahati: NTPC RE Limited (NTPC REL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (GACL) to achieve green energy and green hydrogen goals, as well as to support the Government of India's efforts toward a carbon-neutral economy.

NTPC Renewable Energy

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Harshad R Patel, Managing Director of GACL, and Mohit Bhargava, Chief Executive Officer of NTPC REL in New Delhi yesterday.

The MoU envisions collaborating in the fields of Renewable Energy, Green Methanol, and Green Ammonia, as well as mutually exploring opportunities for the supply of 100 MW RE-RTC (Round The Clock) power and the production of 75 TPD Green Methanol and 35 TPD Green Ammonia for captive use by GACL at its Vadodara and Dahej complexes in Gujarat. NTPC Limited has been at the forefront of RE capacity development and is credited with introducing the country's lowest solar tariff.

This is a first-of-its-kind novel initiative between a leading CPSE and a State Government Promoted Company to support the country's commitment to meet renewable energy targets and reduce greenhouse emissions.

NTPC REL, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC, was established in October 2020 to manage NTPC's RE business. This news comes on the heels of NTPC announcing its green hydrogen initiatives, including plans to build the country's first pilot projects for synthesizing green methanol, establishing green hydrogen filling stations, blending green hydrogen into PNG, and developing a green energy storage project.

This would be the country's first commercial-scale Green ammonia and Green methanol project, and it would be in line with the Prime Minister's vision for Atmanirbhar Bharat.

The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is India's largest power utility, with a total installed capacity of 69 GW (including JVs and subsidiaries). In order to expand its renewable energy portfolio, NTPC formed a wholly-owned subsidiary on October 7, 2020, called "NTPC Renewable Energy Limited" (NTPC REL), which will pursue Renewable Energy Parks and Projects, including Green Hydrogen, Energy Storage Technologies, and Round the Clock RE Power.

GACL is one of India's largest producers of Caustic Soda, with over 1400 TPD capacity at their two complexes in Dahej and Vadodara. GACL has a subsidiary company, GACL-NALCO Alkalies and Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. (GNAL), which is constructing an 800 TPD Caustic Soda Plant as well as a 130 MW Thermal Power Plant (coal-based) in Dahej.
