The North East Gas Grid (NEGG) has completed over 50 per cent of the North East Natural Gas Pipeline. 1,656 km of pipeline has been laid at an expense of Rs. 2236.97 crores. This is 50.17 per cent of the target.
The project was initiated by the approval of the Cabinet committee on Economic Affairs with a fund of Rs. 5999 crores in 2020 in a viability gap funding for a 1,656 km gas grid in the northeastern region.
This allocation was 60 per cent of the project cost of Rs. 9,256 crores for a pipeline in the region’s right states by Indradhanush Gas Grid set up by the state-run Indian Oil Co-orporation, Oil and Natural Gas Co-orporation, GAIL, Oil India and Numaligarh Refinery to supply gas to industries, homes and transport vehicles.
The government expects availability of gas to boost industrial l growth without spoiling the environment. The project is scheduled to be completed in March 2024.
The project runs rough 12 districts of Assam, one district of Arunachal Pradesh, and two districts of Manipur, four districts of Meghalaya, two districts of Mizoram, two districts of Nagaland, two districts of Sikkim, seven districts of Tripura and two districts of West Bengal.
The Ministry of Petroleum and and Natural Gas stated that as many as 411 km of mainline wielding and 324 km of pipeline lowering out the total length of 1656 km of the NEGG project was over by July end itself.
The work for laying down the planned natural gas pipeline grid was entrusted to the Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board.
The NEGG project connecting the northeastern states to the National Gas Grid via the Barauni Guwahati natural gas pipeline is a part of the “Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga” scheme.
