Meghalaya Government has announced that all iconic infrastructures of the state that were built during the tenure of former Chief Minister (Late) PA Sangma will be refurbished on the occasion of his 75th birth anniversary.
Amongst the structures is the Tura supermarket which was inaugurated by the Late CM in 1998.
Purno Agitok Sangma served as the Speaker of Lok Sabha from 1996 to 1998 and as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990. He passed away on March 4, 2016, at 68 years of age.
The four-storey massive complex of the Tura Supermarket, commissioned two decades ago, was one of the biggest market complexes in the entire Northeast at that time. During that time, many eyebrows were raised questioning the need for such a massive market in a small town like Tura. Nevertheless, the project withstood the test of time and became a pride of the entire Garo Hills and stands tall even today.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, son of Late PA Sangma, said that the market deserves an upgradation of infrastructure. He added that the government will initiate the process to immediately consider the repair and restoration of the various amenities within the complex.
Sangma informed that there are plans to refurbish its infrastructure including bathrooms, tiles, and escalators.
Tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Conrad Sangma tweeted, “Happy to announce that all iconic infrastructures initiated by Late P A Sangma will be given a facelift to commemorate 75 years of his Birth Anniversary this year and to honour his many contributions to State,”
