New Delhi: The Ministry of Road Transport is set to introduce a comprehensive plan aimed at improving road safety by constructing dedicated lanes for two-wheelers in the state, reports said.
As per reports, this initiative will also involve the construction of pedestrian foot over bridges or underpasses along major urban arterial roads.
The move comes in response to the pressing issue of non-segregated traffic, which has been identified as a leading cause of high crash rates in India.
By creating separate lanes for two-wheelers and providing safe passage for pedestrians through overbridges and underpasses, the ministry hopes to mitigate the risks associated with mixed traffic flow.
Under the banner of the 'SAFE' initiative, the Ministry has put forth a consultation paper aimed at crafting strategies to mitigate road crashes and fatalities, with a particular emphasis on safeguarding VRUs.
Drawing inspiration from successful implementations in countries like Malaysia, which have dedicated corridors for two-wheelers along highways, the proposed strategies aim to segregate traffic and curtail accidents.
Insights from government statistics reveal that an alarming 44 percent of road accidents and subsequent fatalities in India involve two-wheelers.
Pedestrians, on the other hand, account for 17 percent of all crashes and a shocking 19 percent of fatalities. Pedestrians, bikers, and two-wheeler riders account for more than half of all traffic accident fatalities.
