Shillong: The Meghalaya government is targeting about 1,000 villages to be covered under the 4G USOF Project and 4G Saturation project to ensure that internet connectivity reaches the rural areas and bandwidth is improved across the state.
The services will be expanded to cover about 100 sites across the state. The 5G service has also been initiated at selected sites in Shillong. The state government is also working jointly with the Assam government to lay down the optical fibre network for drawing 100 GBpE bandwidth from Bangladesh.
Apart from this, Meghalaya is also taking other initiatives to boost the information technology sector and strengthen digital infrastructure.
While the first phase of the Shillong Tech Park was operationalised last year helping create over 1,500 jobs, the second phase has begun with an investment of Rs 114 crore.
The Meghalaya government expects that once the tech park project is complete, it will create 3,000 direct and 10,000 indirect employment. Tura in Garo Hills will also get a tech park.
The government is also planning to provide incentives to private players to set up IT and ITeS enterprises. It allocated Rs 191 crore under Budget 2023-24 for various IT-related projects and initiatives.
