Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh Department of Agriculture in collaboration with Patanjali Food Ltd, Zone Ill Oil Palm Division conducted a mega oil palm plantation programme under the National Mission on Edible Oil and Oil Palm (NMEO-OP) in Moruk area of Remi village, East Siang, on Saturday.
A public awareness meeting was organised with farmers and other stakeholders at the community hall of Mirem village.
DC Tayi Taggu encouraged farmers to engage in cash crop cultivation of oil palm. He emphasised that it was an opportune time to acquire planting materials and inputs with government subsidies to support their oil palm cultivation venture. He also advised farmers to seek the expertise of the Agriculture Department for guidance.
The state government has also signed an MoU with Patanjali to ensure that farmers receive good remuneration with the provision of a buy-back policy after fruiting begins. The processing unit at Niglok will utilise all the Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) and produce produced by the farmers of the district as per the MoU.
District Agriculture Officer O. Moyong told Business-Northeast that adopting intercropping of oil palm with crops like ginger and vegetables could enhance production. Oil palm cultivation is a remunerative and sustainable income-generating cash crop farming and is less labour-intensive.
Moyong has also advised adopting intercropping of oil palm with crops like ginger and vegetables and adopting scientific farming by following a “package of practices to boost production”.
