Kaziranga National Park: Training of silk handloom weaving under SAMARTH scheme launched

Jorhat: The Central Silk Board under the Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India, in collaboration with Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve, launched the Skill Training under SAMARTH Scheme for Silk Handloom Weavers of Kaziranga Forest Fringe Community on October 24, 2024. Minister of State for Textiles and External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita graced the scheme launch event and Guru Shishya Hastashilp Prashikshan programme for woodcraft schemes at Kohora, the main entrance of the world-famous national park in Assam. 

During the event, Pabitra Margherita spoke of PM Narendra Modi's 5F vision (Farm to fibre; fibre to factory; factory to fashion; fashion to foreign) and the outstanding transformation of the skilling ecosystem in the textiles sector after the launch of the SAMARTH scheme. He said that the impact is significantly visible in silk handloom and handicrafts sectors mostly in rural India and that the initiative in Kaziranga will pave the way for dignified livelihood and promote tourism.

The Ministry of Textiles launched the Scheme for Capacity Building in Textile Sector known as SAMARTH in 2018 to improve skills for youth and sustainable employment in the textile sector. The handloom sector-SAMARTH training will last about 40 days per batch, including a subsistence allowance of Rs 150 per day for each participant upon successful completion.

The Guru Shishya Hastashilp Prashikshan Programme (GSHPP) under the National Handicrafts Development Programme (NHDP) is designed to preserve traditional crafts through a hands-on learning approach. In Kaziranga, the initiative focuses on wooden toy craft, fostering the development of this specific craft form in the region.
