Guwahati: The Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman announced in the Union Budget 2025 that the Jal Jeevan Mission will be extended till 2028 with an increased overall budget, with the goal of reaching 100 per cent coverage of rural families with connections to drinkable tap water.
“Since 2019, 15 crore households representing 80 per cent of India's rural population have been provided access to potable tap water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission scheme," Sitharam stated.
She further announced that the government plans to sign separate MoUs with states and union territories to ensure the sustainability and efficiency of water service delivery, reinforcing its commitment to a water-secure future for all.

Through individual tap connections, the Jal Jeevan Mission seeks to provide every rural home in India with clean and sufficient drinking water. The program's lofty goal was to reach every rural family by 2024. However, the administration has not yet met this goal. The increased budget for the Jal Jeevan Mission reflects the Centre’s commitment to a water-secure future for all, ensuring that every rural household has equitable and uninterrupted access to safe drinking water.
