Guwahati: In a major step to boost India’s healthcare infrastructure, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced that the government will facilitate the setting up of Day Care Cancer Centres in all district hospitals over the next three years. As part of this initiative, 200 centres will be established in 2025-26 to enhance cancer treatment accessibility across the country, as announced under the Union Budget 2025-2026.
The move aims to strengthen the treatment of cancer, ensuring that patients receive specialised care without requiring long hospital stays. The daycare model will allow patients to undergo chemotherapy and other treatments without overnight admission, significantly reducing the burden on tertiary hospitals and enabling equitable healthcare access for people in remote and underserved areas.

Along with the establishment of 200 centres by 2025-205, Finance Minister also highlighted the government's efforts in expanding medical education. Over the past decade, 1.1 lakh undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) medical seats have been added, marking a 130 per cent increase in capacity.
For the upcoming year, an additional 10,000 medical seats will be introduced in medical colleges and hospitals. This expansion is part of the government's long-term plan to add 75,000 medical seats over the next five years to address the growing demand for healthcare professionals in India.
