New Delhi: India's overall power generation capacity has increased by approximately 80 percent in the past decade to reach 4,46,190 MW (4.46 GW) by June 2024, as stated in Parliament on Monday. The capacity installed in March 2014 of 2,48,554 MW increased to 4,46,190 MW by June, according to Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik.

Responding to the Rajya Sabha, he stated that the capacity of coal-based power has expanded from 1,39,663 MW in March 2014 to 2,10,969 MW in June 2024. The minister mentioned that the renewable sector's installed capacity rose from 75,519 MW in March 2014 to 1,95,013 MW in June 2024.

Naik said that the Indian government plans to establish at least an extra 80 GW coal-based capacity by 2031-32.

Additionally, he mentioned that 1,95,181 circuit kilometer (ckm) of transmission lines, 7,30,794 MVA of transformation capacity, and 82,790 MW of inter-regional capacity have been incorporated. This has united the entire country into a single grid operating on one frequency, able to move 1,18,740 MW from one region to another.

India's grid is now one of the biggest unified grids globally. He stated that linking the entire country to a single grid has turned the country into a unified electricity market. In addition, 2,927 new substations were included, 3,965 existing substations were improved, and 8.5 lakh ckms of high and low tension lines were added/ upgraded, as stated by the MoS.
