Hyundai Names Jose Munoz As Incoming President And CEO, First Non-Korean In Role

Detroit: Hyundai Motor Co. has announced that Jose Munoz will take the helm as its president and CEO starting January 1, 2024. A seasoned auto executive with extensive global experience, Jose Munoz is set to succeed Jaehoon Chang, who will step up to vice chair of Hyundai’s Automotive Division. With his appointment, Jose Munoz becomes the first non-Korean to lead Hyundai.

Currently Hyundai’s global chief operating officer and head of its North American operations, Jose Munoz has been instrumental in boosting Hyundai’s U.S. presence since joining from Nissan in 2019. Under his leadership, Hyundai’s North American sales have surged by 16 percent, reaching 801,200 vehicles last year. He also spearheaded major investments in the U.S., including Hyundai’s 12.6 billion dollars commitment to new manufacturing facilities and battery ventures in Georgia.

Automaker Outline ‘Hyundai Way’ Vision Aiming At Expanding Mobility, Energy Solutions

Jaehoon Chang expressed confidence in Munoz’s capability to steer Hyundai through intensifying industry competition, saying, “Jose is a proven leader with vast global experience.” The automaker recently outlined its ‘Hyundai Way’ vision, aimed at expanding mobility and energy solutions.

Jose Munoz, originally from Spain and now a U.S. citizen, brings nearly two decades of auto industry experience and leadership to his new role. Excited for the path ahead, Jose Munoz stated, “Succeeding in this challenging industry requires excellence throughout the value chain… I’m motivated by the challenge ahead and want to continue Hyundai’s growth trajectory.”
