Guwahati: The wholesale flower market in Panbazar, one of the largest in Guwahati, witnessed a surge in sales during the festive season, with florists reporting “higher profits and an overwhelming response from customers.”

According to the florists of Guwahati, the demand for marigold, a traditional favorite during Diwali celebrations, skyrocketed this year. Flower vendors told Business North East that they collectively sold over five lakh marigold flowers amid Diwali festivities. “The demand not only exceeded expectations but also led to a substantial increase in profits for the flower sellers”, a local vendor informed BNE.

Florists in the market, interacting with BNE, expressed their delight over the robust sales figures. One vendor shared, "This Diwali has been exceptionally good for us. We have seen an increase in the number of customers. Demand for marigold has also picked up due to festive season. We managed to make profits exceeding one lakh, a considerable boost for our business."

One notable aspect of this year's Diwali flower market was the remarkable drop in prices of marigold garlands. Traditionally priced between Rs 40-60, the festive flower garlands were available at a more affordable price of Rs 20-25, contributing further to the increase in sales volume.

Most of the supplies come from Kolkata, West Bengal, one of the florists informed BNE.

It was witnessed that the market was abuzz with activity throughout the festive season, attracting a larger crowd in comparison to 2022.

Flower vendors informed that there was an uptick in the number of customers. “Even though a lot of private flower shops have opened in the city and people now have a plethora of options, a huge number of customers continue to buy a large amount of flowers during festive occasions” a vendor said.
