Shillong: In response to the rising prices of essential commodities such as food grains, pulses, and vegetables, the Government of Meghalaya has introduced a series of measures to stabilize the market. The price surge has been attributed to irregular monsoon rains, heavy rainfall, India’s growing population, unique topography, high labor and transportation costs, and the state's reliance on imports. These factors have severely affected the cost of living for the people of Meghalaya.

To mitigate these challenges, the Food Civil Supplies and Consumers Department has initiated various actions aimed at ensuring the availability and affordability of essential commodities. A key aspect of this strategy is the implementation of the Price Monitoring System (PMS), which tracks and publishes wholesale and retail prices for 22 essential items. This system helps protect consumers by monitoring and controlling price fluctuations.

Further strengthening these initiatives, the department has set up two levels of Price Monitoring Committees: a State Level Price Monitoring Committee and District/Sub-Divisional Vigilance and Monitoring Committees. These committees oversee price trends, conduct routine inspections, and take action to prevent hoarding, black marketing, and unwarranted price hikes.

In addition, the department operates the PMS Dashboard, which records daily commodity prices across all districts and sub-divisions. This Management Information System (MIS) Dashboard serves as a vital tool for department officials, enabling informed decisions to maintain price stability.

The primary goal of these initiatives is to ensure that essential commodities remain accessible and affordable for the people of Meghalaya, while maintaining an uninterrupted supply in the market and curbing exploitative practices.
