New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has given its approval for the continuation of the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) with a budget of Rs. 8139.50 crore for the period 2022-23 to 2025-26.

This scheme comprises two components: NESIDS-Road and NESIDS-Other Than Road Infrastructure (OTRI).

Notably, the scheme is fully funded by the central government. The decision to merge the former North East Road Sector Development Scheme (NERSDS) into the NESIDS-Road component prompted the need for new guidelines to effectively manage and implement the restructured NESIDS during the remaining term of the 15th Finance Commission.

The revised guidelines for both components of the NESIDS have been issued after extensive consultations with stakeholders and thorough internal discussions.

The core objective of the NESIDS is to bolster the development of infrastructure, particularly in sectors like connectivity, in the North Eastern States.

Additionally, the Union Cabinet has sanctioned the continuation of the 'Schemes of NEC' from 2022-23 to 2025-26, with a total budget of Rs. 3202.7 crore. Updated guidelines for these schemes have also been established after comprehensive discussions and consultations.

The key aims of the MDoNER's schemes are to complement the initiatives of various Central Ministries & Departments and address the specific needs of the North Eastern States.
These schemes play a vital role in bridging developmental and welfare gaps. By undertaking projects such as enhancing connectivity, addressing social sector deficiencies, and boosting livelihood and employment prospects, the MDoNER schemes offer essential support to the eight North Eastern States.

The recently issued comprehensive guidelines for these schemes, in conjunction with the collaborative efforts of the Ministry and the cooperation of the North Eastern States, will expedite the achievement of the intended goals transparently and efficiently.
