Guwahati: Guwahati is hosting the 1st North East Para Sports Meet 2024 from November 27 to November 29 this year. More than 550 athletes from across the Northeastern region will compete in five sports disciplines. A press meet was conducted in Guwahati, Pandu, to share more details about the upcoming event.

Udayachal, a unit of the Jadav Chandra Memorial Trust, working towards the development of children with special needs, in association with the Paralympics Association of Assam and under the aegis of Para Olympic Committee of India is hosting the event at Sarusujai Stadium. Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika inaugurated the event on November 27.

"This is a proud moment for both Assam and Northeast India. For the very first time, a Para Sports event is being organized in this region. All the states of Northeast India will be participating. This sports meet has been made possible with the support of the Assam Government, Assam Paralympic Association, and the Jadav Chandra Bhuyan Memorial Charitable Trust, as it is entirely a CSR-driven initiative," Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, President of the Committee, told Business North East (BNE) while sharing her excitement for the event.

On the other hand, Cultural Convenor Zarir Hussain also elaborated on the event's significance, saying, "The event's symbol, 'Puhor' or 'the light,' is designed to reflect the pride of Northeast India. The design features the Hornbill, a symbol of the region, wearing the Assamese 'Fulam Gamusa.' This event is a true collaboration of CSR activities, with the support of the Assam Government and the Paralympic Association of India."
