Kokrajhar: The Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) 2025 was solemnly launched at NTPC Bongaigaon on July 1, marking the start of a month-long initiative aimed at development of the all-inclusive growth of young girls from rural groups.
Now in its fourth year at the Bongaigaon unit, the flagship program reflects NTPC’s ongoing commitment to social accountability, gender equality, and community upliftment.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Smt. Masanda Pertin, Deputy Commissioner of Kokrajhar, who served as Chief Guest. Also present were Arnab Maitra, Head of Project, NTPC Bongaigaon; Kasturi Maitra, President, Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club; and other senior officials and dignitaries.
This year’s edition of GEM will host 40 girls, aged 10–12, selected from 12 nearby schools. The residential program, scheduled from July 1 to 30, offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to nurture self-confidence, leadership skills, creativity, and a sense of social responsibility.
The program also stresses on the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of participants.
The inaugural ceremony featured a short film highlighting GEM 2025 activities, followed by vibrant cultural performances by students of Bal Bhawan and Notre Dame Academy. A theatrical act titled "Educating the Girl Child" showcased the participants’ growing consciousness and creativity.
Alumni from preceding GEM editions shared moving testimonials about the transformative impact of the program on their lives.
In her keynote address, Pertin emphasised the critical role of empowering young girls in strengthening families and communities. Shri Maitra reaffirmed NTPC’s commitment to inclusive growth, telling GEM as a vigorous platform for shaping future women leaders.
Well-known guests at the event included Debarata Kar, CGM (O&M); Soumya Kar, Vice President, Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club; L.N. Meitei, Commandant, CISF; and Amit Kumar Asthana, Head of HR. Members from employees’ unions, welfare associations, and parents of the participants also attended the ceremony.
Since its inception, NTPC’s Girl Empowerment Mission has impacted over 12,700 girls across various locations countrywide, firming its role as a catalyst for change and sustainable community development.
