Digital Artisan awardee from Northeast shares her thoughts

Guwahati: Winner of Digital Artisans of India Award 2023-2024 Manjuwara Mullah from Assam, who was selected among 115 applications across India, attributed her victory to her hard work, team and creative thinking.

Talking to Business North East after her achievement, Mullah said she was feeling "great." She is the founder of 'Amrapari', a women's collective that was created during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown as a way of creating sustainable livelihoods for women dwelling in the char areas of Assam.

The Digital Artisans of India award was instituted by the Digital Empowerment Foundation and it was awarded at the National Craft Museum in Delhi. The Digital Empowerment Foundation and Digikargha, in collaboration with Creative Dignity had launched the Digital Artisans of India award in 2023. The award acknowledges artisans and organizations using digital technology to enhance traditional skills in India. 

Winners are also given a cash prize worth Rs 1 lakh.

“We took to social media to sell our products and have trained designs our artisans through online mode only," Mullah said on Amrapari. "Our katha embroidery is important and it gave these women a source of livelihood.

Mullah said she applied for the award around 10 months back.

The handloom and handicraft industry is embracing contemporary and sustainable means to contribute to its growth. Digital intervention helps keep these traditional arts and crafts relevant and visible in the modern world. Digital tools are being used to enrich the design, presentation, and preservation of time-tested techniques, making them a valuable contemporary addition to traditional arts and crafts. The Digital India Foundation (DIF) in India aims to promote discussions on opportunities within the Indian government's Digital India programme.

It covers topics such as Make in India, Smart Cities, Technology Inclusion, Digital Literacy, Participative Governance, Innovation Incubation, Software Product Procurement, E-Business, and Disintermediation of Markets.
