Tezpur: Dabur India Limited, in collaboration with CIFOR-ICRAF and TRAAHI, the social arm of Kirat Biotech Private Limited, recently hosted a significant plantation drive and training workshop in Tezpur.

The event saw participation from approximately 250 farmers, who received essential training on sustainable cultivation practices. As part of the initiative, over 7,000 saplings of various species, including Arjun, Jamun, Neem, Karanj, Moringa, Bael, and Amaltas, were distributed to promote environmental conservation and sustainable income generation for the rural community.

The event was jointly organised by TRAAHI and the Jivanti Welfare and Charitable Trust (JWCT), New Delhi, with sponsorship from Dabur India Limited and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF). Prominent figures present at the event included Dr. Arup Jyoti Kalita, State Coordinator Assam, CIFOR-ICRAF India Country Program; Dr. Gurmeet Singh, Unit Head, Dabur India Limited, Tezpur; Dr. Surendra Bhagat, Principal Scientist, Dabur India Limited, New Delhi; Mr. Swarjisuma Basumatary, Senior Executive - CSR, Dabur India Limited; Pramila Choudhury, President TRAHI, and Manish Choudhury, Director, Kirat Biotech Private Limited.

During his address, Dr. Gurmeet Singh emphasized Dabur's dedication to integrating environmental sustainability with community development. He noted that the day's activities were in line with both Dabur's environmental goals and the Amrit Brikhya Andolan led by the Chief Minister of Assam. Pramila Choudhury highlighted the continued success of the partnership between TRAAHI and Dabur India Limited in Assam, citing a similar initiative in Udalguri District last year that saw the distribution of over 13,000 medicinal plant saplings across 10 villages.

Dr. Arup Jyoti Kalita underlines the importance of trees in daily life and the benefits agroforestry offers to farmers. He explained the goals of the Trees Outside Forests in India (TOFI) initiative, which seeks to expand tree cover outside forested areas by offering economic incentives, reducing risks, and enhancing access to reliable information on tree cultivation and agroforestry practices.

JWCT, working under Dabur India Limited's Corporate Social Responsibility framework, focuses on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. The integrated program designed by JWCT, in collaboration with TRAAHI, aims to promote "ex situ" conservation of valuable medicinal plants on government lands and other designated areas in Assam. Pramila Choudhury added that the program's objectives extend beyond tree planting to include the establishment of herbal gardens, ongoing research, education, and sustainable forest produce harvesting, which will help local communities generate income responsibly.
