Guwahati: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma presented appointment letters to 1,127 candidates at a function held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, as part of the state's initiative to provide government jobs to one lakh youth. With the appointment of 266 junior engineers for the Public Works Department (PWD) and 812 nurses for the Medical Education Department, the total number of government jobs provided by the current state government has reached 99,097 in just three years.
The state government appointed 4,779 youth in 2021, 35,130 in 2022, and 48,638 in 2023. In 2024, 3,595 candidates have already been appointed. Additionally, from the state government’s budget, 6,955 posts have been filled in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), and North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NC Hills).
During the event, CM Sarma urged junior engineers to apply the academic knowledge they acquired in college to their work and to avoid over-reliance on contractors. He also emphasized the need to reduce the maternal mortality rate and to bring about qualitative improvements in institutional deliveries. The number of medical colleges in the state is set to increase to 13, with the second medical college in Guwahati starting its academic operations next year. The medical colleges in Biswanath, Bongaigaon, and Charaideo are expected to become operational by 2026.
The state government will soon launch a portal allowing government employees to apply directly for transfers through mutual agreements with other employees. Furthermore, the compassionate grant for deceased government employees will now be distributed in an 80:20 ratio, with 80% going to the spouse and 20% to the parents, in an effort to discourage family divisions during times of grief.
